What is a thrombocyte
Thrombocytes are small blood components produced in the bone marrow with a key role in blood clotting. The main function of thrombocytes is to stop the bleeding of injured blood vessels. In mammals, thrombocytes are anucleated cell fragments called platelets.
Nucleated thrombocytes of nonmammalian vertebrates differ from mammalian thrombocytes not only in having a nucleus, resembling B lymphocytes, but also these nucleated thrombocytes do not aggregate in response to ADP, serotonin and adrenaline. They do aggregate with thrombin.
In response to vascular injury, thrombocytes gather at the site of the interrupted endothelium to help form blood clots, sticking to plug the impairment. Here’s a simplified account of the process:
1. Adhesion. Thrombocytes (platelets) bind to specific membrane receptors outside the interrupted endothelium.
2. Activation. A change in shape takes place, receptors become activated, and chemical messengers are secreted.
3. Aggregation. The activated thrombocytes (platelets) connect with each other. This happens through receptor bridges.
To put it simply, thrombocytes, which is more commonly known as platelets, is a blood component crucial to normal blood clotting.
Clot formation is the process where blood forms into a clot, which is an important part of hemostasis. Coagulation (thrombogenesis) is the hematologic undertaking by which blood changes into gel, eventually forming a blood clot. Hemostasis is the cessation of blood loss from the damaged blood vessel. In response to injury, the blood vessel wall becomes covered with platelet and fibrin-containing blood clot to stop the bleeding and begin the repair of the damaged vessel. Disorders in coagulation can either lead to increased risk of bleeding (hemorrhage) or obstructive clotting (thrombosis).Strap RED Studded Black Ankle Valentino Boots Y11wtRq

- Thrombocytes are commonly known as platelets.
- Normal platelet count ranges between 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter of blood.
- Thrombocytes are derived from megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells. Megakaryocytes are huge cells that is broken down into smaller fragments forming thrombocytes or platelets. The fragments contain structures called granules and have no nucleus.
- The granules contain proteins which are essential for blood clotting and bind together when recognize damaged blood vessels.
- One megakaryocyte produces anywhere between 1,000 to 3,000 platelets.
- It takes about 8 to 10 days for platelets to circulate in the blood stream.
- Old or damaged platelets are filtered from circulation by the spleen. Functional platelets along with functional red blood cells and white blood cells are stored.
- Stored red blood cells, white bloods cells, and platelets in the spleen are released in cases of extreme bleeding. Each will serve their function which include compensating for blood loss, fighting infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses, and blood clotting, respectively.
